Brigid’s Cross Pendant

This Pendant is my interpretation of the traditional St. Brigid’s Cross.

Named for St.Brigid who was born in 450 AD, Legend has it that Brigid collected rushes from the ground and wove them into a representation of the Christian Cross to make her point to a local Chieftain. The Cross was thought to ward off evil, fire and hunger. See the photo of the traditional Reed Version.

As one of Ireland’s Patron Saints, St. Brigid’s story seems to have been weaved together with that of Brigid, the pre Christian Goddess of Fire. This resulted in both St.Brigid’s Day and the traditional Celtic Festival Imbolg being celebrated on the 1st February each year heralding the beginning of Spring.
